In their final home matchup with Maryland as ACC opponents, the Virginia men's basketball team held off the Terrapins 61-53 at John Paul Jones Arena on Monday night.
Joe Harris led the 17th-ranked Cavaliers with 19 points, inclduing 4-for-7 shooting from behind the arc. Malcolm Brogdon added 14 points and Akil Mitchell had 13 for the Cavaliers.
UVa has now won eight games in a row overall, improving to 20-5 on the season and 11-1 in ACC play. The 'Hoos are off to their best start in conference play since the 1981-82 team opened 12-1.
Maryland held a one-point halftime lead before Harris led the Cavaliers on 19-9 run to start the second half. The Terrapins cut the lead to 4 with 2:11 to play, but the 'Hoos finished 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of play.
The win was the fourth in nine days for the Cavaliers, who next play on Saturday Feb. 15 at Clemson. The Tigers are 15-7 this season, inclduing a 6-4 record in the ACC.
