Senior Day Approaches for Virginia Lacrosse

It's been a roller-coaster season for the Virginia men's lacrosse team, and that ride will make it's final regular-season stop Saturday when the Cavaliers (5-7) host Bellarmine.

It will be the final game at Klöckner Stadium for 10 Virginia seniors and fifth-years, including Matt Cockerton, Jacob Ghitelman, Dan Lantz, Chris LaPierre, Conor McGee, Nick O'Reilly, Harry Prevas, Blake Riley, Charlie Streep and Matt White.

"It's a group that's been through a lot and has a lot to be proud of," head coach Dom Starsia said Thursday before practice. "This season has been a little trying for them but the fact we come out here everyday and practice, get to work and don't hang our heads, speaks to who these guys are as much as anything else."

The seniors themselves, however, insist Saturday's matchup isn't the time to reflect. The Wahoos have potentially three games left (Saturday's finale and two ACC Tournament games) and would need to win all three to qualify for an NCAA Tournament they've only missed twice since 1990.

"I think it's more about winning this game so we can go into ACCs on a roll than it is winning our last game at Klöckner," O'Reilly said. "Obviously that's important but we want to get on a run and hopefully get into the NCAA's."

The Cavs are hoping to avoid another loss Saturday which would be its seventh straight. Along the way have come numerous one-goal losses coming in either the final seconds of regulation or overtime.

"There have been positive signs in each of the games. It's just a matter of playing a complete game and putting both ends together as much as it is anything else," Starsia said.

"We're alright," added White. "We're working hard and fully expect to win the rest of these games and kind of sneak into the tournament and anything can happen from there.'
