Phillip Sims is the most experienced quarterback on the Virginia roster, and the only one who appeared in a game for the Cavaliers last season.
But when Virginia released its pre-spring depth chart earlier this week, the rising junior was listed third at the quarterback position. And on Saturday, Sims said he didn't have an explanation why.
"It is what it is," he said after Saturday's practice. "I don't know nothing about how it came that way, or what's going on. But it is what it is, man."
Sims was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA last summer after transferring to Virginia from Alabama. He appeared in all 12 games for the Cavaliers, including four starts, throwing for 1,263 yards and nine touchdowns, with four interceptions.
Michael Rocco, who split time with Sims last year, transferred to Richmond after the season. But sophomore David Watford, who redshirted last year after playing as a true freshman in 2011, and redshirt freshman Greyson Lambert are both listed ahead of Sims on the spring depth chart.
Head coach Mike London stressed after Monday's first day of spring practice that too much shouldn't be taken from the depth chart.
“They all know that everybody’s competing for a job out here, so the quarterback situation is no different than the DBs or the running backs," London said.
And Sims -- who was only briefly available to the media on Saturday before hustling off to a meeting -- had little else to say about the situation.
"I'm here to play football, man," he said. "Nobody wants to hear excuses about "What's going on with this? How's this going?"
