The Virginia men's lacrosse team is in an unfamiliar position for the 2014 season as it prepares to make its first-ever trip to Notre Dame Sunday.

The No. 6 Cavaliers are coming off their first loss of the season last Saturday at Cornell.

The 6-1 Wahoos had been ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls before the loss to the Big Red.

At Thursday's practice, head coach Dom Starsia recounted what he took from the loss.

"Well I think it's been a fairly consistent theme thoughout the early part of season for us: we've had our moments but we haven't played consistently enough," he explained. "We haven't played 60 minutes of lacrosse. And I think all the players, it's easy enough to see that when you watch the film of these things and I think the players understand that."

"We feel like we're about 95 percent there but that last five percent is the toughest to get, which is what we're trying to do," sophomore Tanner Scales added.

Scales said he didn't believe anything had changed for the team following the loss, and the 'Hoos were focused as ever ahead of Sunday's clash in South Bend.

"Our motto is just prepare each day, regardless of win or loss," Scales explained. "Nothing has been really different about this week. We've kept our focus and looking forward to redeeming ourselves from last week."

The Hoos and Irish are no stranger to one another, but Sunday marks the first contest for the two as ACC foes. Virginia has already played and beat Syracuse, the other newcomer to ACC lacrosse.

Starsia says the Irish are a methodical team on both ends of the field, and UVa will have to practice patience and not get caught up in Notre Dame's style of play.

"You need to maintain your discipline on both ends of the field. It may seem you'll get good opportunities early on offense but you have to be patient and mine for better ones."
