The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team concluded its three-match homestand Thursday with a 7-0 win over Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers (14-0, 3-0) won their 96th consecutive match against ACC competition.
“We want to keep getting better as a team,” said head coach Brian Boland. “It is important to focus at every position and these matches are good chances to do that. We want to win as a team, but also realize that every match is equally important, no matter what the team score is at that point. This is the regular season and there is an opportunity to keep developing. Each player needs to realize that everything they do on the court through the course of competition will have an impact on where we are as a team come May. That is our focus and so far we have done a great job with that.”
Virginia opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. In singles, the Cavaliers won five of the six first sets to take control of the match. They won four of those matches in straight sets to extend their lead to 5-0. Alex Domijan cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3, followed by Justin Shane’s 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Mitchell Frank sealed the win at No. 2 and Mac Styslinger added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4.
The final two matches went to a decisive third set. At No. 6, Julen Uriguen scored a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory and at No. 1, Jarmere Jenkins rallied from down a set and 5-2 in the second set to win 11 straight games for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Virginia opens a three-match road trip on Saturday as it visits Boston College.
