Powhatan won the team title at the Jefferson District Wrestling Championship held Saturday at Fluvanna County High School. The Indians had four gold medalists while Fluvanna and Monticello had three each.
The Monticello girls held on to beat Western Albemarle, 46-38, in a battle for second in the Jefferson District. The Charlottesville boys and Madison girls were also winners on the night.
The Western Albemarle boys and girls swim teams both won Jefferson District titles Saturday at the district championships. Western's Seana Acker was named girls Swimmer of the Year while Charlottesville's Nathaniel Bullard won boys Swimmer of the Year.
The Monticello girls beat Fluvanna, 41-28, one night after knocking off previously unbeaten Powhatan. The Mustangs have won three of their last four in the Jefferson District. The Miller boys also picked up a big win at home, knocking off defending state champions Virginia Episcopal, 75-33.
Western Albemarle's Olivia Hajek and Monticello's Zoe Brents were both named to the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-State Field Hockey Team as First-Team selections Thursday. Seven other local stand-outs were named to the Second Team.
Monticello, Louisa and Buckingham each lost its playoff matchup Friday night. Monticello fell to Liberty, 42-14; Louisa was done in by Powhatan, 35-0, and Buckingham was handled by King William, 32-14.
The Western Albemarle boys and Fluvanna girls won Jefferson District Cross Country titles Wednesday. Powhatan's Rachel Byrd was the girls' individual winner while Dave Taylor of Western claimed the boys' crown.
The Western Albemarle and Monticello Field Hockey teams will meet in the Jefferson District Title Game. The Warriors blasted Powhatan, 5-0, while the Mustangs shut out Charlottesville, 3-0.
Monticello's Isaac Robinson was named this week's Falcon Club Player of the Week. He ran for over 200 yards and scored four touchdowns in a win over Charlottesville.
The Monticello and Western Albemarle golf teams prepare for the AA State Tournament. The Mustangs and Warriors finished first and second, respectively, at the Region Two Tournament.
