Western Albemarle's Kai Shin was named Male Student Athlete of the Year after a stellar season between the posts with the boy's soccer team.

Shin earned Jefferson District Keeper of the Year honors for the second straight year after recording 13 shutouts in his senior season. Shin allowed, on average, 0.65 goals per game and was also named to the Region II All-Star Team.

In three varsity seasons, he notched 29 shutouts.

After the loss of 12 seniors from 2010, Shin was among the team leaders willing the Warriors to both a regular season and Jefferson District title, plus a berth into the Region II Tournament. Western finished the year 13-3-4.

Off the field, Shin competes in wrestling and judo. The senior was a state bronze medalist for the Western Grapplers in his debut season on the mat.

In judo, Shin worked 13 years to achieve black belt status, working under the guidance of his father. He won the 2009 U.S. Open Judo Championships and was a Junior National Team MVP in 2010.

Shin also excels in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA and is a member of several honor societies. The Western graduate will continue his education at the University of North Carolina next fall.
