In a battle for the top spot in the Jefferson District, the Fluvanna boys held off a late rally from Western Albemarle for a 49-45 win on Tuesday.

"It was a big win for us," said senior guard YaYa Anderson. "We came out and played defense, held them maybe five minutes without scoring and that's what we gotta do, get back to doing that."

The Flucos improve to 7-1 and regain sole possession of first place. The Warriors fall into a tie for second place with Monticello at 6-2. The Mustangs defeated Louisa 64-46 on Tuesday.

Fluvanna took the lead in the opening minute of the second quarter and never lost it. The Flucos led by as many as 13 points at the halftime break after a 17-6 run to close the half.

Western rallied in the final minutes of the game, cutting the deficit to three points with 1:30 to play. Will Donnelly made it a one-point game with 52.3 seconds left, trailing 44-43. The Warriors missed on an attempt to tie the game at the 17 second mark. Fluvanna padded their lead with free throws down the stretch.

YaYa Anderson led Fluvanna with 21 points. The Warriors' Parker Morris and Ben Turner scored 13, while Donnelly chipped in 11.

The Jefferson District tournament begins on Friday February 10.
