Warriors Riding Momentum into Crucial Powhatan Matchup

Western Albemarle is arguably the hottest team in central Virginia. Fresh off a 28-0 shutout of rival Monticello, the 5-0 Warriors face their next challenge Friday night against reigning Jefferson District champ Powhatan in our Friday Night Endzone Game of the Week.

Western is playing with a ton of confidence and head coach Ed Redmond attributes it to the players buying into the new system.

"Well I think they're a very confident group," Redmond explained. "Our guys know that they sort of get what they earn in this program and if they put in the hard work and trust each other and the coaching staff, they're going to get some results out of that."

The Warriors picked up a few key out-of-district wins early in the season, including a big victory over Liberty-Bealeton, but opened many more eyes with their dominant shutout of then-unbeaten Monticello.

The Western secondary harassed Mustangs quarterback Jhalil Mosley into four turnovers and held the Mustangs in check on the ground.

Next on the docket is a Powhatan team that went undefeated in the JD last season.

"We're definitely confident going into this game but you have to respect every opponent but fear nobody. That's how I like to approach the game. I'm sure everyone else approaches it like that," junior lineman Patrick Maupin said.

The Warriors seem to be rolling on all cylinders. Once a team that could score 40 a night, but also likely to surrender 40, Redmond has instilled a defensive presence in Crozet. yet the Warriors themselves aren't satisfied.

"I think we could get better. I think every week we try to come out and challenge ourselves to become better football players and I don't think we've reached our potential yet. We have some ways to go," senior lineman Josh Gibson added.
