The Western Albemarle girls lacrosse team fell just three wins shy of a repeat season as Virginia State Champions, falling 16-13 to Oakton.
The Warriors trailed 12-5 at halftime before answering after the break with a quick goal from Anna Liebowitz. Western cut the deficit to three goals before the final buzzer, but the Cougars held off a late push.
Oakton, the Region II AAA Runner-up will advance to the semifinals later this week. The Cougars (16-6) have won nine of their last ten games.
Western finishes the season 17-3 as Jefferson District and Region II AA Champions.
