Consistency is one thing that the Buckingham Knights football team has had down-pat for the past few seasons. Just last year, the team was 10-0 in the regular season, but fell in the opening round of the playoffs to Gretna.
On Friday evening, the two teams met once again. This time in the Division II finals of Region B play.
With star backs like the Knights' Maurice Taylor and the Hawks' Nick Miller on display, the two teams exchanged blows early, before the Hawks took a commanding 29-15 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Knights came out swinging. Even after falling down in a 35-15 hole, the team battled back thanks to a Taylor touchdown reception and two Tarian Ayers rushing TD's, the game was knotted at 35 and headed to over time.
With the Knights up first in the extra frame, Taylor found pay dirt once again on a sweep to the right-side. However, the point-after try by the Knights was wide left leaving only a 41-35 advantage for Buckingham.
The Hawks took advantage. On fourth down on the ensuing Gretna drive, Miller squeaked in for a rushing touchdown before the Hawks converted their point-after for the 42-41 victory.
Buckingham finishes their season with a final mark of 10-2.
