Local Stars Have Their Moment On National Signing Day

February 1, 2012

Local Pair Headed to VMI
Monticello's Sam Patterson and Buckingham's Tarian Ayers will be teammates at Virginia Military Institute.

Patterson, a first-team all-region receiver, had almost 900 yards on the season and scored nine touchdowns. He chose VMI over offers from Richmond and Virginia Tech, who wanted him as a preferred walk-on.

"It just felt right," Patterson said. "The coaches in particular made it feel like the right decision. From Day One I was really close with them and it seemed like we just gelled really well and they made my decision easy."

Ayers was the focal point of Buckingham's offense. The quarterback was an all-region pick and had over two-thousand total yards and *32 touchdowns on the season.

Duprey Chooses Elon
William Monroe tight end Zach Duprey signed on to play for the Elon Phoenix. He had almost 300 yards receiving on the season with four touchdowns and was also a CBS19 Burger King Student Athlete of the Week in 2011.

"Lot of hours spent going to camps and talking to coaches. Definitely a difficult process but worth it," Duprey explained. "Academically I felt like it was a good fit and athletically as well. I liked the coaches, too, so everything about it was a good fit for me."

Another Bumper Crop for Fork Union
FUMA saw 25 post-graduates sign NLI's and three prep stars signed on the dotted line as well.

Adrian Gamble and Ryan Doull are two post-grads who are ticketed to UVa.

Gamble, a wide receiver form Charlotte, and Doull, an offensive lineman from Canada, each credited Mike London and his staff for helping aid their decision.

"I chose to go to UVa because Coach London, he has more of a family-type relationship with his players, so I just felt the connection from there," Gamble said.

"I really liked the coaches. The players were great and it seems like a nice community," Doull added. "Coach London is a real good man. I can tell he's family-oriented and cares about his players. It's just a great atmosphere."

Offensive Lineman John Tu'uta will be playing against them in ACC battle as he signed with North Carolina State. Tu'uta was a first-team all-region and first -team all-VISAA pick.

Defensive Lineman Conlan Cassidy will be attending Indiana State University. He too was a first-team all-VISAA selection and had 83 tackles and four sacks.

Wide Receiver D.J. Randle-El signed with Bryant University in Rhode Island.
