Jefferson District Finals Field Set

May 24, 2011

Early run support proved to be enough for both Jefferson District baseball winners Tuesday night. In the early game, William Monroe scored on an error in the second inning, before adding three more in the third. Jordan Gentry and Logan Forloines each connected for a RBI triple in the inning to put the Dragons on top 4-0. Gentry threw 6 shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. Following the game, he was named the 2011 Jefferson District Player of the Year. William Monroe Head Coach Mike Maynard was chosen as Coach of the Year.

In the late game, Monticello jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Fluvanna in their first at-bat. Derek Knight started the scoring on a bases clearing triple. The Mustangs led 7-0 after 3 innings and held off a late rally from the Flucos to advance with a 7-5 victory. William Monroe and Monticello will play for the JD title Thursday 7:30 p.m at Orange.

In soccer playoffs Tuesday, Western Albemarle continued to live up to their number one seed cruising past Orange and into the District Championship game, 4-0. Their opponent will be No. 2 Fluvanna who also advanced via shutout, downing Charlottesville 2-0. This will be the fourth season meeting between the two teams. The Flucos won both regular-season games against the Warriors, but lost in a one-game playoff to determine the district’s regular season champion. The game will be at Western Albermarle Thursday, 7:15 p.m.

The Black Knight girls punched their ticket to the finals just the same Tuesday, netting five goals over Western Albemarle for the win. Monticello edged Fluvanna 4-3 in comeback fashion to set up a 1-2 seed match up Thursday. Top seed Charlottesville will host the game at 6:45 p.m.
