Flucos Fall to Cave Spring in State Semifinals

Posted: Tue 7:05 PM, Mar 06, 2012

The Fluvanna County boys basketball team has once again come up a few games short of a state championship.

The Flucos' season ended in the AA Division 3 state semifinals for the second straight year on Tuesday, with a 76-59 loss to Cave Spring at the Siegel Center in Richmond. Fluvanna ends the season at 24-4.

"We said before we started the game that somebody's going to win and somebody's going to lose," Fluvanna coach Munro Rateau said afterward. "And if we're afraid to lose, let's not go out there. And we weren't afraid to lose. But they won the game, and I've got to congratulate them."

The Knights rallied from a nine-point second quarter deficit to lead Fluvanna by two at halftime, then outscored the Flucos 26-11 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Cave Spring senior Amin Abuhawwas led all scorers with 29 points, including 5-of-8 three-point shooting. Fluvanna senior YaYa Anderson finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

"Last year we did the same thing, lost in the semifinals," Anderson said after the loss. "And it's just more special because I did it with a different group of guys. At the beginning of the season, everybody was doubting us. So we came out and we showed them that we can make it to the same spot, whether we lost four or five seniors. It was a good journey."
