A recent visit to Radford University during spring break changed everything for Fluvanna High School senior Ashleigh Harris, who always hoped to play softball at the college level.
"I always had a dream to play there, and I had people supporting me and believing that I could," Harris said Wednesday. "But I guess it really hit me once I went down there and talked to the coach at Radford."
Harris is now committed to play for the Highlanders next year. On Wednesday afternoon, the Flucos held a brief signing ceremony celebrating her decision.
Harris was an All-Jefferson District selection as both an outfielder (first team) and infielder (second team) as a junior in 2012. Harris says she'll play either outfield or shortstop at Radford.
But regardless of position, Harris says the opportunity to play in college is a special one.
"It means a lot," she said. "I'm the first one in my family to go to college. So that's a big feeling, I guess. And just the fact that I'm able to go there and play ball as well, it's pretty amazing."
"It still hasn't sunk in yet that this is real."
