It had been nearly a year since William Monroe enjoyed a win on the football field. But that streak ended Friday night against George Mason. The Dragons exploded in the first half and hung on in the second to win on homecoming, 48-35.
Last year, the William Monroe Dragons had one of their best season in the last two decades. This year, they'll try to continue those winning
ways, but they'll have to do it with a lot of new faces on the field.
William Monroe Seniors Jordan Gentry and Doug Sizemore signed on the dotted line Wednesday at a ceremony at William Monroe High School. Gentry will pitch at Louisburg College in North Carolina while Sizemore will wrestle for West Liberty University in West Virginia.
The top-seeded Fluvanna boys basketball team won a thriller over fifth-seeded Charlottesville in the Region II semifinals. Defending VIC Champion Blue Ridge also advanced to the VIC title game with a big win over Liberty Christian Academy in the semifinals.
Both the William Monroe and Madison County girls basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end in Regional quarterfinal play Wednesday night. Monroe fell to Central Woodstock 45-41 and Madison lost 49-19 to East Rockingham.
The William Monroe boys fell to George Mason, 67-54, in the Bull Run District Championship. The two teams split their regular season matchups with Mason winning a one-game playoff to claim the regular season title.
