When new classifications were released last year, William Monroe hoped it would be moved from Group AA to Group A in hopes of being more competitive in the classification of smaller schools. It didn't happen, as the Dragons were over the limit by just one student and remained in Group AA, where they competed in the Jefferson District and Region II. William Monroe filed an appeal with the Virginia High School League and received some good news on Monday night.
The VHSL granted William Monroe its appeal as the Dragons will switch classifications to Group A beginning with the 2011-2012 season. They'll join the Bull Run District and Region B. Madison County High School is the only other local team in the Bull Run District, so the two bordering county rivals will battle every year in a district meeting.
William Monroe is not the only team leaving the Jefferson District prior to the 2011-2012 school year. Orange will depart and move to Group AAA, while Goochland will return to Group A.
