Student-Athlete of the Week - Brian Snow

March 1, 2012

Brian Snow is a captain for the William Monroe golf and swim teams and helped guide both squads to states this season. In the pool, the Dragons took third in the Bull Run district and Region II, sending nine swimmers to the VHSL meet.

Individually, Brian went undefeated this season in all district and regional races, claiming gold in both the 100 backstroke and 200 IM at both championship meets.

"I had a really good season," said Brian. "I had found like a spark in my swimming...it was a lot of fun, it was a great experience."

Brian made his fourth straight appearance at the state championships, placing for the first time. The senior finished fourth in the 100 back and 14th in the 200 IM.

"The competition at states was incredible," he said. "I was facing swimmers that got full rides to D1 schools that are top 10 in the nation for NCAAs and it was just awesome to be able to race them."

"He holds probably 4 of 5 team records," said 11th year head coach Chris Taylor. "We've had some fast swimmers come through our school and he's definitely one of the best that we've seen. "

Brian is still making college plans and hopes to attend dental school in the future. He's currently working on a senior research project as part of an internship that focuses on the need for dental care reform, especially for children.

"Dentistry is usually overlooked but it's such an important thing," said Brian of the need to make sure everyone is protected. "The mouth is an entry point to the body. The same plaque that goes on your teeth is the same plaque that contributes to blocking arteries. It's a little thing that can lead to bigger problems later in life."

The senior is enrolled in honors and AP courses at William Monroe and ranks 14 out of 200 students in his class, earning a weighted 4.2 GPA.

"To be successful at the level he is as a swimmer and as a student," said Taylor. "It just takes a great commitment of time and managing your time."
