Alexa Smith is a three-sport athlete at William Monroe High School. A member of the volleyball, basketball, and track and field teams, the senior is an honor roll student and member of the Jefferson District All-Academic Team.
Alexa played three years of varsity basketball and helped guide the Dragons to a 10-2 district record this winter. Head coach Philip Lamb called her the perfect selection for captain.
"Just the way she played on the court and always giving the right kind of effort," he said. "It really helped our younger athletes see the way they're supposed to play when they get a chance to compete."
Coach Lamb also complimented Alexa's work ethic.
"She's a very focused, very determined young lady. She does portray that in the classroom as well, a very solid student here at William Monroe. She brings a mentality that you need in high school sports."
"I feel like if you're doing something why not work hard at it," said Alexa of her goal-driven attitude. "You're there for a reason so you may as well give it your all."
In her senior year, Alexa is taking college courses as part of the school's sports medicine program. She also works in the training room and plans to major in physical therapy in college.
"I just like being able to help athletes like me," Alexa said. "I understand a hard and long season can get you tired, through injuries and stuff and I like being able to help them out."
Alexa will also play basketball for Hollins University next year.
