2007 saw the Monticello Mustangs win the state championship and 2008 saw them fall just two wins short of state gold, as the Stangs fell in the semifinals to James Monroe on a controversial pass interference call. Following that season, many of the key players graduated and moved on in their academic and athletic careers, leaving Brud Bicknell and company to rebuild and this season Monticello will see if it worked.
Last season saw the Mustangs struggled a bit, finishing the campaign 4-6. The campaign served as a good chance for many players to get their feet wet with consistent playing experience. Tyler Moneymaker saw extensive time as the starting quarterback and will return with that year under his belt, but several other players have a shot at the starting job as well. Running back Jesse Ayres finished up the season very strong and returns as the primary running back.
Bicknell will also see the return of assistant coach Rodney Redd. Redd served last year as Fluvanna's head coach, leading the Flucos to a 3-7 finish. In their only meeting against each other, Bicknell and Redd coached in a game that went down to the wire, as the Mustangs made a red zone stand to hold onto a 14-9 win. This season, Redd returns to Bicknell's coaching staff, where he was before he took the Fluvanna head coaching job.
