August 27th Friday Night EndZone

August 27, 2010

While most of our area teams will wait and begin their football seasons next week, four local squads kicked off Friday night. Three of the four tasted victory and got their 2010 campaigns off on the right foot.

Western Albemarle picked up its first win of the season on Friday with a 15-10 win over Waynesboro. The Warriors were taking the field for the first time since graduating all of their starting skill players from last year's team that finished 9-2. Abbot Wallenborn led the charge in his first start at quarterback for Ed Pierce and Western, but did most of his damage on the ground. Wallenborn ended the night with 161 rushing yards on 23 carries and one touchdown. He also threw for a score as well. The Warriors will travel to Turner Ashby next week in hopes of a 2-0 start.

Fluvanna earned Jason Barnett a win in his first game as the Flucos' head coach with a 36-14 win over Prince Edward. Fluvanna jumped out to a 15-0 lead after the first quarter and held a 15-7 lead at halftime. The second half was all Flucos, as they outscored the Eagles, 21-7, over the course of the final two quarters. Quarterback T.J. Dudley and running back Ben Markiewicz combined for 251 yards and three scores on the ground for Fluvanna. The Flucos improve to 1-0 and will host Madison next Friday night.

Buckingham hit the road for its first game of the season on Friday and earned a hard-fought 13-6 win over Appomattox. It marked the Knights' eleventh straight regular season victory, after finishing the 2009 regular season 10-0. Buckingham will play its home opener next Friday against Nelson.

Covenant did not get the Dandridge Payne era off on the right foot on Friday, falling to Norfolk Christian, 42-21, in Payne's head coaching debut. The Eagles will try again next Friday as they host Atlantic Shores.

Western Albemarle head coach Ed Pierce joined us in-studio to talk about his team's win on Friday night and about his 2010 squad in general.
