MHS Turf Field Halfway Finished

July 6, 2009

There is still work to be done in the coming weeks, but the Monticello High School turf field is halfway finished.

Construction workers will begin putting down the turf next week and the project should be completed by August 14th. The girls' field hockey team will be the first team to play a game on the new field in August, and school officials are in the beginning stages of planning a special dedication for the field before Monticello's first football game against Albemarle on September 4th.

Monticello Athletic Director Fitzgerald Barnes says the idea for the new turf field came up about five or six years ago when he attended Monticello's football game at Amherst and saw the turf field there. He thought that the turf field was the way to go in the future, but waited until the price came down to a point where school officials could start actively seeking financial support for the field. Only $75,000 came from Parks and Recreation money, the rest of the money was raised from private donations. The total cost of the project is $625,000.

Barnes also says that the project is currently ahead of schedule and he is excited for when his teams and those in the community get to use the field.
