Rich Vrhovac became a fixture on the Albemarle sideline during the last decade, but now the Patriots will look to a new leader. Long time Vrhovac assistant Wendell Green takes over the program, after Vrhovac stepped down earlier this year. The new head coach looks to lead a young team to big things.
Green takes over a team that is looking to compete for a Commonwealth District championship. Gone are several starters from last year's team, including quarterback Jeremy Robinson, but the Patriots do have several experienced players. Depth at running back will be key as Jervon Speller and Mayn Fransisco will split tailback duties for Albemarle.
Another obstacle that Albemarle must overcome is travel. District away games usually carry a travel time of more than two hours.
The Patriots open up their season on September 4 at Monticello, and play their first district game at North Stafford on September 25. Click on the above video link to view Jed Gamber's complete preview of the 2009 Albemarle Patriots.
