It was a rainy end to the week in our area, but in most areas, the wet weather moved out to make way for high school football. Nine of the ten scheduled games in our area went off as scheduled, with several teams picking up key late season wins.
Charlottesville traveled to Louisa in our Game of the Week in a battle of two teams with 2-1 district records. The Lions roared to victory with a 46-6 thrashing of the Knights. Louisa improves to 3-1 in the Jefferson District and will head to Goochland, while the Knights host Monticello.
Orange looked to bounce back from an overtime heartbreaking loss to Louisa last week, as the Hornets welcomed William Monroe for action on Friday. The Dragons struck first, taking the 3-0 lead, but after that it was all Hornets. Orange rolled to the 44-3 victory.
Fluvanna welcomed Goochland and played the Bulldogs tough, but the visiting team pulled away in the end. Goochland topped the Flucos, 21-7.
The Buckingham Knights kept their unbeaten hopes alive. The Knights topped Cumberland in their James River District opener, 32-0, to improve to 7-0 on the season. They'll travel to Randolph Henry.
Albemarle had some trouble with Massaponax tonight. The Patriots lost 65-0.
Nelson was unable to pick up its second win of the season. The Governors fell to Dan River in their Dogwood District opener, 46-6. They'll take on Appomattox next Friday night.
Fork Union made the trip down to Liberty Christian and did not fare well. The Blue Devils fell to the Bulldogs, 28-0. They'll face Collegiate next Friday.
STAB was unable to handle Collegiate tonight. The Saints fell, 37-14, and will face Covenant next week.
As for the Eagles, they were playing their second game in four days this afternoon, as they welcomed Virginia Episcopal to their home field. Covenant jumped out to a 17-0 lead, but was unable to hold on, as VES picked up its first win of the season with a 40-32 win. Sam Dale had eight catches for 150 yards and touchdown in the loss.
One area game was affected by the weather. Western Albemarle was set to host Monticello, but that game was postponed. It will be made up on Monday at 7:00pm in Crozet.
