Covenant Hoping to Finally Break Through Against STAB

Something's got to give Friday afternoon in the St. Anne's-Belfield/Covenant game.

Either the Saints will down the Eagles to pick up their first win of the 2012 season, or this season's Eagles squad will do something no other Covenant team has done----beat STAB.

Covenant coach Dave Rocco and his team are obviously hoping for the latter in a matchup of two bitter cross-town rivals.

"We don't like them, they don't like us," senior wide receiver Jordan Hendrick said. "We haven't really had much to say to them since we always lose but this is going to be the year."

Rocco is in his second year at Covenant and experienced the rivalry firsthand last season. He says his team is constantly eyeing up its cross-town rivals.

"I know our kids get extremely pumped for this game. I know they get pumped way before they should be getting pumped," Roco explained. "They're worried about the STAB game when we're playing other teams and that sometimes upsets me but it is a big game for our team."

It's a big game for the Eagles not only because it's against their rivals. At 3-4 Covenant is also in the hunt for a playoff berth and any win at this stage is important.

"It's up to us whether we make the playoffs or not. We're the only ones who can control that," Rocco said. "It's a big game from a playoff standpoint but so is next week and the week after that. I want the kids to be excited but to realize afterwards that we have other games to play."

"Actually this week we've been talking more about winning than beating STAB," Hendrick explained. "Getting into the playoffs is one of our main goals and to get in we need to beat STAB and every other team."

The Eagles say they will rely on their senior leadership to hopefully get them past their rivals and into the postseason.

"This year we think we have a real strong group of seniors, lot of leaders, and it's not going to be easy," senior tight end Peter Gould said. "We're expecting a fight from them but we really think this year's a good chance for us to win."
