Covenant Rocks Hargrave for First Win of 2010

October 7, 2010

Entering Thursday's game against Hargrave Military Academy, Covenant had scored no more than 28 points in a game this season and were 0-5 on the year. They sure didn't look like that team on Thursday afternoon, as the Eagles put together a complete performance to rout Hargrave Military Academy, 61-22, to earn Dandridge Payne his first win as head coach.

After Hargrave took an early 7-0 lead, Covenant responded with three unanswered touchdowns to open up a 20-7 cushion. Chris Shifflett and Sam Patterson scored the first two on the ground, followed by a 33 yard pass from Lee Coppock to Jesse Getchell in the second quarter. Hargrave would trim the lead to 20-14, but the Eagles responded, putting together a scoring drive in the two minute minute offense that ended with a four yard TD pass from Coppock to Patterson, giving Covenant the 27-14 lead at the break. The Eagles would not look back from there, coming out of the break with four unanswered touchdowns, three via the turnover. Shifflett scored another TD with an 85 yard run in the third quarter, and the Eagles recovered a fumble and returned it for a score just 24 seconds later. Covenant would get its next two scores by way of interception returns for touchdowns, and after a Hargrave touchdown, would cap off the scoring with a Getchell 70 yard run to paydirt.

Shifflett led the Covenant ground game with 118 yards on 12 carries and the two scores. Getchell paced the receivers with 61 yards, while Coppock completed seven of his 14 pass attempts for 136 yards and two touchdowns, without throwing an interception. The Eagles gained 391 yards of total offense on the afternoon.

Covenant improves to 1-5 on the year and will look for its second straight win when the Eagles travel to Virginia Episcopal next Saturday for a 2:00 pm kickoff.
