Nelson County football saw a disappointing season in 2009 in Mark Wells' first year as Governors' head coach. Now, the coaches and players are ready to bounce back and compete for a Dogwood District title and more.
Wells returns for his second season at the head of the Nelson sideline and will lead a team into battle that he feels is more well-rounded. The team also says that this year's version of the Governors has a much better work ethic than last year's club that finished 2-8.
"It was like nobody put forth the effort to get better at practice," said Nelson tight end Trevor Martin of last year's team. "They thought they could just come out here on Friday night and just win automatically."
"We had a tough schedule," says Wells." Seven teams out of ten we played finished 7-3, so you know, it was a murderous schedule." Wells goes onto say that, despite the losing record, it's a season he can build on. "We got some things done and the attitude this year has escalated from last year."
With a hard working group back and a strong defense as the backbone of the team, the Governors feel they have a legitimate shot at contending for a Dogwood District championship, and their main goal is to being playing after the regular season.
"Our main goal is to make the playoffs," Wells says. "Our motto this year is 'the time is now', you know, no more waiting around. It's time to do it."
Nelson opens up its 2010 campaign at Buckingham on September 3.
