Blue Ridge Outlasts Covenant in Wild Week 6 Opener

In a game marred by multiple personal foul penalties and two head coach ejections, Blue Ridge scored the game-winning touchdown with under two minutes to play to top Covenant, 20-13, and stay undefeated at 4-0.

Brady Doyle hit Hernan Henderson with the Eagles' game-tying touchdown but the go-ahead extra point was blocked.

The Barons then got the ball and struck quickly, with Tristan Allen finding Leon Strauss over the middle. Strauss turned on the after burners and went 56 yards for the game-winning score.

Tailback Shawn Steen led the way for the Barons with 78 yards on 12 carries while Jon Meade led Covenant with 61 yards on three catches and a touchdown.

Blue Ridge tried catching Covenant off guard with an onsides kick to open the game but the Eagles fell on the ball. The teams would trade the ball for much of the first quarter until Blue Ridge's PJ White got the ball on an end around and went 56 yards for the game's first score.

Shortly after, Covenant head coach Dave Rocco was ejected for the team's second sideline unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

With their leader gone, the Eagles rallied as Doyle connected with Meade for a 38 yard score to tie the game at 7-7.

Blue Ridge then twice drove deep into Covenant territory only to be shut out, once on a fumble and then a blocked field goal.

The Barons would get one last crack before the half, however, as White intercepted Doyle and ran it back inside the 10, setting up a Jimmy Connor-to-Leon Strauss touchdown. The extra-point was blocked, however, and Blue Ridge led 13-7 at half.

Things were mainly quiet in the third, save for Barons' coach Orlando Patterson also getting ejected for his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Blue Ridge will try to stay perfect next Saturday when it hosts St. Stephen's-St. Agnes. Covenant (3-2) will host Norfolk Academy next Thursday.
