The Virginia men's soccer team picked up right where it left off in 2009, beating UAB 2-1 in its 2010 season opener at Klockner Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, UAB would get on the board in the second half. Babayele Sodade scored in the 58th minute to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead. UVa would respond just moments later, though. Sean Murnane was fouled in the penalty box in the 61st minute, and Sean Hiller converted on the ensuing penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1. Then, in the 74th minute, Hiller sent a cross that was headed in by Will Bates for the game-winning goal. It was the sixth career game-winning goal for Bates.

Prior to the start of the game, the Cavaliers raised a national championship flag to commemorate the team's 2009 NCAA title.

Virginia is now 43-21-3 all time in season openers. The Cavaliers will host Saint John's Sunday at 3 pm.
