A popular UVA coach took a time out from basketball to get into the holiday spirit Wednesday.
Basketball coach Pete Gillen rang the Salvation Army’s kettle bell at the Barricks Road shopping center.
The coach attracted a bit of attention and, money. Within two hours, he managed to collect $569, a record high that normally takes up to two days.
Gillen says he's been ringing the bell for about four years and really enjoys it.
“I do it about two times each Christmas, less fortunate than us,” Gillen explains.
Last year, Charlottesville’s Salvation Army raised $71,000 through their annual kettle bell ringing.
This year, they hope to reach $85,000.
