Charlottesville- Sophomore guard Monica Wright poured in a career-high 27 points to lead four double-figure Cavalier scorers, and the University of Virginia women’s basketball team topped Richmond, 80-59, Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena.
Wright was a force on both ends of the floor, connecting on 10 field goals including a career-high three 3-pointers. In 32 minutes, she did not have a turnover and added five rebounds, two steals and a block.
Equally impressive was Lyndra Littles, who netted 18 points and made several athletic plays that ignited the announced crowd of 2,471. Starters Paulisha Kellum and Aisha Mohammed added 12 and 11 points, respectively, while floor general Sharneé Zoll dished out 10 assists.
Leading 11-10 with 14:13 left in the first half, the Cavaliers (2-2) reeled off 18 unanswered points over the next seven minutes to take a commanding 29-10 lead. For the rest of the half Virginia maintained a comfortable double-digit lead.
In the second half, the Spiders got within 10 points, 67-57, with 5:32 left on a layup by Johanna McKnight. Virginia responded with a 3-pointer by Wright and Richmond would get no closer the rest of the game.
The Spiders (1-3) were led by Katie Holzer with 16 points.
UVa heads to the Rainbow Wahine Classic over Thanksgiving Week, with its first scheduled game being Friday, Nov. 23 against Texas. Tip-off is 6:20 p.m. Eastern Time.
