Monticello High School Athletic Director Fitzgerald Barnes has been an awfully busy man this week.
But instead of planning for basketball games and scheduling wrestling meets like many of his contemporaries, he's still focused on football.
"We're very excited," he explains. "[Playing in the] state semifinals of Division 3 on our home field...the atmosphere is just buzzing around here."
The Mustangs meet Poquoson of the Tidewater area Saturday afternoon and Barnes says Mustang fans will be out in full force to support a good group of young men.
"Watching them from freshmen to seniors now, they take the same work ethics in the classroom that they do on the field so it's understandable why they've been very successful this year."
And he adds, it's not just students and parents who are getting excited about the Mustangs' season.
"I'm in the grocery store yesterday and I'm looking and I'm seeing people with Monticello t-shirts, hats...showing their pride."
With around 4,000 folks expected for Saturday's 1 o'clock kickoff, the school's administration would like to see fans out at the stadium early.
"If you get there at 12:45, you may get in by halftime," Barnes predicts. "We are encouraging people to come in at 10:30, buy your ticket...come back, but buy those tickets early."
There was no pep rally at the school Friday. They say they'd like to save that until next week if they make the state finals.
Saturday morning students are coming out for a huge tailgate about two-and-a-half hours before the game.
