Mustangs Win State Championship

The Monticello Mustangs are the VHSL Division 3 Football Champions, after defeating Richlands, 36-22. It's Monticello's first state title in the program's 10-year history. It's also the first state trophy in any sport at Monticello, and the first state football championship by a public school in Albemarle County.

The Mustangs got big plays from their seniors. Takeem Hedgeman ran for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Daniel Lieb caught six passes for 172 yards and scored twice.

After the Blue Tornado tied the game at six in the first quarter, Monticello responded with 30 points in the second and third quarters to race out to the 36-6 lead. Daniel Lieb caught touchdown passes of 55 and 60 yards. Takeem Hedgeman ran for scores of 22 and 1 yard.

Richlands rallied with 16 points in the fourth quarter, but Monticello hung on to win.

Quarterback Michael Graham had a very effective day completing 10 of 15 passes and throwing for 232 yards.
