The Virginia (5-1-1) baseball team completed a weekend sweep over Monmouth University (3-3) Sunday with a 13-1 win in game three. From Friday through Sunday, the Cavaliers outscored Monmouth 38-6 over the course of three games.
On Sunday, RHP Whit Mayberry threw a six shutout innings, allowing six hits. Junior center fielder Reed Gragnani went 4-for-4 while freshman Brandon Downes had a 3-for-5 day, connecting on a triple, and two doubles. Downes also brought in four runs and scored three of his own. Senior shortstop Chris Taylor hit a three-run home run as the Cavalier offense combined for 18 hits.
Virginia got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after an RBI double from Downes scored Jared King. Keith Werman batted in Downes on a sacrifice bunt to give UVa a 2-0 lead.
The Cavaliers used a seven-run fifth inning to secure the victory, capped off by Taylor's three run blast to left center field. His home run came after hits from Mike Papi and Downes bounced off the outfield walls. 11 Cavaliers batted in the inning, pushing their lead to 9-0.
Virginia next hosts Liberty University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
