The Virginia Men's Lacrosse Team convened this afternoon for its first practice of the 2008 season. Dom Starsia's squad returns 30 letter winners and seven starters from last season's team, which once again advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The Cavaliers enter the season with hopes of improving upon last season's finish. Virginia entered the NCAA's as the number two seed, only to be abruptly ousted by Delaware. The season prior saw great success for the squad, which finished undefeated en route to a national championship.
Ben Rubeor leads the returning Virginia players. He paced the Wahoos with 46 goals and 22 assists last season, and returns as a first team All-American. The senior attack understands what winning a national championship takes, as he was a valuable asset to the 2006 team.
As for Starsia, he returns for his 16th season at the head of the Virginia program. In that time he has won five ACC titles to go along with his three national championships, and has only experienced on losing season. Starsia has led the Cavaliers to the NCAA Tournament in 14 of his previous 15 seasons as head coach.
