The Charlottesville Black Knights took aim at Orange tonight, the second place team in the Jefferson District Boys Basketball standings, and hoped to draw closer to Monticello for the district lead. After 32 minutes, the Knights found themselves in second place, after a 60-57 win. Quintin Hunter scored 15 points for the Hornets in the loss, while Kevin Leatherwood led Charlottesville with a game high 22.
Meanwhile, the district-leading Mustangs fell tonight as well. Monticello jumped out to a quick first quarter lead, but could not hold off the Western Albemarle, as the Warriors nipped the Mustangs, 55-53. Monticello's lead is trimmed to just a half game.
In Commonwealth District action, Albemarle topped Massaponax, 70-55. Cameron Anderson paced the Patriots with 22 points, while Adam Utz added 18 and Andre Roberts chipped in nine.
On the girls side, Charlottesville was topped at home by Orange, 55-46. The Knights got 19 points from Shawntae Payne, but could not stop the Hornets, who were led by Christine Harvey with 13 points. The Knights fall to third place in the Jefferson District, holding a 9-2 record. Both of Charlottesville's losses came at the hands of Orange.
Western kept pace with the Hornets, topping Monticello 46-35. Mary Schwartz scored 18 points in the Warriors' win. Western is tied with Orange for the top spot.
Fluvanna was also victorious in district play tonight, topping William Monroe, 52-41. Tyonna Key led the Flucos with 12 points, while Kiana Lloyd and Aerial Stewart both chipped in eleven.
