Brian Hurlocker once played football under Micky Sullivan Fork Union Military Academy, and now he is taking over as the head of the program. Hurlocker was also an assistant under Coach Sullivan for most of the last decade, and he feels that is one reason why the transition between coaches has been a smooth one.
"Our goals are the same, the way we coach is the same," Hurlocker says of Sullivan, who was the head coach at FUMA for 28 years. "My experiences here, both as a cadet and a coach, I've kind of pulled all that together into what I do now."
The players at FUMA already know Hurlocker's coaching style, because he's been there throughout their careers.
"It's great, because everybody already knows him and knows his expectations, you know, and just knows how to deal with him" says senior center Mark Uptergraff. "He's a good explosive coach."
"He's tough, added senior wide receiver Charles Clardy. "Football is a tough sport, so you have to be tough. He lets you know how it is. He'll tell you what you need to do and get you where you need to be."
Hurlocker may be tough, but Uptergraff says the best thing he brings to the team is energy. "His enthusiasm, his excitedness about the game, and you know, just getting everybody hype and ready for the first game."
That first game is Saturday against Georgetown Prep, and it will mark the first time Hurlocker has a chance to see what this inexperienced team can do on gameday.
"We're real green," Hurlocker says of his squad that brings back very few starters from last season. "We're going to have to face a lot of uphill battles, but we'll deal with them as they come, we've done it before and we'll continue to keep pushing forward."
"It's a lot of young guys," said Clardy. "A lot of new guys came in, a couple old guys came back, so they're still learning the FUMA way of playing football."
The FUMA way of football may be a little different this year with a new man in charge, but the Blue Devils hope the level of success will stay the same.
"The expectations here aren't going to change," Hurlocker said. "We're going to fight hard to get in the playoffs and to get in that last game in November."
