16 CAMPS: Nelson County Governors

It's a new day for the Nelson County football program.

After just five wins total the last three seasons, the Governors turned the program over to Mark Poston.

Poston comes over from Eastern Montgomery, where he led the Mustangs to a state title game appearance just three seasons ago. Nelson County may not be ready for that just yet, but Poston "is" ready to improve the Governors now.

"I think in football you have to concentrate and focus on winning now. We want to win every single day we take the field," Poston explained.

"He stepped in the first day he met us and he just gave us like straight-forward, 'I'm going to lead you all to a state championship' or 'I'm leading you all the the postseason'," senior Kelly Kirby said. "We put a lot of trust in him because he puts a lot of trust in us so it means a lot."

"When I first met him his thing is he wants to win," fellow senior Homer Barnett added. "We want to move the ball and we want to score touchdowns, as many as we can. We want to put points on the board."

Known in the past as an option offense, Nelson will run a hurry-up spread under Poston.

"We want to snap the ball every 7-8 seconds, faster if possible," Poston said of the new philosophy. "We think it really just changes the dynamics of the game. It's 100 miles-per-hour when they step on the field."

"We're learning how to get down the field and score, quickly," Kirby said. "The defense won't be able to contain us once we get into our rhythm."

"I think you're going to see a team that's not going to beat itself but it's going to play sound, fundamental football and is going to be very competitive," Poston said.
