After rallying to take the lead, the Cavalier baseball team could not hold off a Duke comeback, falling to the Blue Devils, 9-8, in the opener of a three game ACC series. The loss drops Virginia's record to 13-3, 1-3 in the ACC.
After taking the 2-0 lead into the third inning, Duke put together a rally in the bottom of the third, batting around, and scoring five runs, and added another run to make it 6-2 in the fourth. The Cavaliers rallied for five unanswered runs over the course of the next four innings to take an 8-6 lead.
It all came crashing down in the bottom of the eighth for Virginia, however, as Duke scored three runs to take a 9-8 lead. The Wahoos were unable to score in the top of the ninth, and lost their third consecutive ACC match up. Duke, meanwhile, improves to 15-2 overall, and moves one game ahead of Virginia in the Coastal Division standings.
David Adams went 2-5 with a two run home run in the loss, while Greg Miclat went 2-6 with a triple and two RBI. It was not a good day for Jacob Thompson, who had the shortest outing of his career. The junior hurler lasted just three innings, giving up six runs on eight hits.
The Cavaliers and Blue Devils will hit the field again tomorrow afternoon in Durham. First pitch is set for 2:00.
