The Cavalier women's basketball team has earned a number four seed in the Greensboro Region of the NCAA Tournament. Virginia will tip off against California-Santa Barbara on Sunday night at 9:30 in first round action.
After a two year hiatus from the NCAA Tournament, Debbie Ryan's squad returns to the big dance, and will look to make some noise, as they have done all season. After being picked to finish sixth in the ACC in the preseason poll, Virginia rallied to finish fourth, and posted a 23-9 record. They advanced to the ACC semifinals last weekend.
Now, it's do or die for the Cavaliers, as they head into the field of 64. The Cavaliers travel to Norfolk for first and second round action, with three of the four teams in their pod hailing from the Commonwealth. With a victory against Santa Barbara, the Cavs will face the winner of Old Dominion and Liberty. The Monarchs enter as the region's fifth seed, while the Flames are 12th.
Virginia's region also features the top ranked Connecticut Huskies, who only have one blemish on their record this season. The Wahoos battled UConn back on December 5, with the Huskies taking it in convincing fashion, 75-45. If both Connecticut and Virginia win their first two games in the tournament, they will meet in the Sweet 16 in Greensboro.
The Cavaliers are one of six ACC squads to earn a bid to this season's field of 64. North Carolina, Maryland, Duke, Georgia Tech, and Florida State will also get their chances to play for a title.
