Sean Singletary scored 18 points, including the game winner with 1:12 to play, as Virginia topped Richmond in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational, 66-64. The Cavaliers improve to 16-15 on the season.
The game was close the entire way, as the Wahoos and Spiders battled back and forth in the first half. Virginia led by as many as seven points in the first, but the Spiders powered back, and took a 33-31 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Richmond on top until Singletary's game winner in the final 82 seconds of play. The senior guard hit a running floater to put Virginia up, 65-64, which is all the Cavs would need. The Spiders, on the other hand, saw their season come to an end at 16-15.
In addition to Singletary's 18 points, Mamadi Diane added 15 and Jamil Tucker added ten in the win. The Cavaliers advance to the second round, where they will host Old Dominion on Monday. The Monarchs topped Rider in first round action, 68-65.
