March 21, 2008
The Cavalier football team took the practice field this afternoon to open its annual spring program. Al Groh and his coaching staff will evaluate his players as they prepare for the upcoming 2008 season.
Today is the first of 15 scheduled workouts over the course of the next three weeks. The spring practices on March 30 and April 6 are open to fans, with exact times to be announced at a later date. Virginia's spring program ends on April 12 with the annual Spring Game.
The Cavaliers are looking to fill several holes, as they lose 14 of 18 starters from their Gator Bowl depth chart for next season. Virginia finished 9-4 in 2007, ending in a loss to Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl.
Spring practices will also give new defensive coordinator Bob Pruett a chance to become more familiar with Groh's system. Pruett brings a winning attitude to Charlottesville, as he is the winningest coach in Marshall's history, and had been in retirement for the last three years.
