Virginia Topped by Seminoles in Series Opener

Florida State scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed again, sending the Virginia baseball team to its second straight loss, 10-3. The loss drops the Cavaliers to 24-7, 8-5 in ACC play.

Things looked good fro Virginia early on, as Jeremy Farrell belted his sixth home run of the season in the top of the first, a two run shot to put Virginia up, 2-0. The blast extended Farrell's hitting streak to ten games. Florida State answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame, and never trailed again.

Jacob Thompson lasted 6.1 innings, giving up six earned runs, and striking out only one. Thompson walked five batters, while surrendering eleven hits, en route to his first loss since the NCAA Regionals on June 4, 2006, against Evansville. Prior to tonight, Thompson had not had a loss in 23 games.

Game two of the three game series will be tomorrow night at 7:00.
