Coastal Carolina scored four runs in the eighth inning, which proved to be the difference, as the Chanticleers halted Virginia's five game winning streak by topping the Cavaliers, 8-3. It marks the Wahoos' third straight loss to Coastal Carolina, as they fall to 29-10 on the season.
Virginia struck first in the bottom of the third, as a Tyler Cannon double scored Corey Hunt. Coastal Carolina responded with three runs in the fifth to take the 3-1 lead. Virginia fought back, scoring two in the sixth, capped off by a Franco Valdes RBI triple, but that is all the scoring the Cavaliers would do. The Chanticleers put up four in the eighth and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to finish out the scoring.
Hunt and Dan Grovatt both went 2-4 with a run in the loss, and Valdes' triple was the first of his career. Matt Packer started on the mound for the Cavs, and lasted 4.1 innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out four. Jake Cowan took the loss.
Virginia gets back to ACC play this weekend, as they welcome Wake Forest for a three game series. The Demon Deacons appeared in the 2007 ACC Championship game. First pitch for game one on Friday is set for 6:00.
