The Cavalier men's tennis team grabbed a win in doubles play, and never looked back, topping Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0, in first round action this morning. Virginia punches its ticket to the second round with the victory.
Virginia got the ball rolling early, taking the doubles point. Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh won their match, 8-1, at the number three position, with Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey taking the number one doubles match, 8-2. The Cavaliers held the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Singles action saw neither Devvarman nor Huey earn a point for the team, as the bottom of the line up brought home the three other points. Ted Angelinos was the first to win his singles match up at the number six spot, 6-0, 6-2. Singh followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the number four position, and Michael Shabaz finished things off with a 6-1, 6-3 win at number five.
The Cavaliers now advance to the second round, where they will host Penn State tomorrow morning. The Nittany Lions topped Virginia Commonwealth in the second match of the day, 4-0. Tomorrow's match was originally scheduled for 1:00pm, but has been moved up to 11:00am due to projected inclement weather. With a win tomorrow, Virginia would advance to the round of 16 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
