The Cavalier baseball team had Thursday off, and spent it preparing for Friday's match up with Florida State. The ACC Tournament continues on the heels of a dramatic Cavalier victory on Wednesday night.
In a game of streaks, sixth seeded Virginia upset third seeded North Carolina, 8-7, in eleven innings. Michael Schwimer pitched the final three innings to lock up the win, as the Cavaliers evened their season series with the Tar Heels up at 2-2. The win also likely earned the Cavs a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Now Virginia focuses on Florida State, who is also 1-0 in this year's tournament. The Seminoles cruised past Wake Forest on Wednesday, 8-3. ACC Player of the Year Buster Posey smacked two home runs for Florida State in the victory. During the regular season, the Seminoles swept Virginia in Tallahassee, though two of the games were 3-2 extra inning wins by Florida State.
The winner of Friday's game will be the only remaining unbeaten team in Division B, entering the final day of pool play on Saturday. Those match ups see Virginia taking on Wake Forest, and Florida State battling North Carolina.
Division A teams took the field Thursday. Top seeded Miami outlasted Georgia Tech in a slug fest, 15-12. Eight home runs were hit between the two teams, six by the Hurricanes. Miami's Yonder Alonso and Dave DiNatale hit two round trippers each. The Yellow Jackets held a 12-11 win heading into the ninth inning, when Miami scored four runs to secure the win. In the nightcap, NC State hammered Clemson, 10-0, in seven innings. The four teams that played Thursday will have Friday off.
