Cavalier senior Somdev Devvarman easily advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in the singles bracket on Friday, topping Mississippi's Erling Tveit, 6-1, 6-3. It marks Devvarman's 15th NCAA Tournament win, adding to the NCAA record he set yesterday. He is now just three wins away from his second consecutive national championship.
Devvarman needed just 80 minutes to top Tveit, and improve to 41-1 in singles on the season. The Virginia senior has won 33 straight matches, and will face Denes Lukacs of Baylor on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Devvarman did experience defeat today, however, as he and Treat Huey fell to Conor Pollock and Austin Krajicek of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-4. The two Virginia seniors were ranked as the top seed in the tournament.
