Jacob Thompson pitched five solid innings on the mound, and David Coleman made two spectacular catches in right field, as the Cavalier baseball team upset fourth ranked Florida State, 5-3, in the ACC Tournament. The win improves Virginia to 2-0 in the conference tournament, as both wins have come against teams ranked in the country's top five.

Thompson started the game strong by striking out the side in the top of the first. In the second, the Seminoles jumped out to a 1-0 lead as a Tony Delmonico double scored Dennis Guinn from first. The Cavaliers used small ball to put up three runs in the third, and added one in the fifth and one in the seventh to score their five runs.

The story of the game, however, was defense. Coleman made a tremendous diving catch that flipped him into the seats down the right field line in the fourth. One FSU run scored, but that's as close as the Seminoles would get. In the eighth, with the Cavs up 5-3, Coleman laid out to make another impressive catch in right center field, taking away what would have been at least a double and what would have probably scored another Florida State run.

Pitching was also a key. Thompson lasted five innings, giving up just two earned runs on five hits while striking out six. Matt Packer came on and allowed just one earned run in three innings, while Michael Schwimer came on to grab the save.

The Cavaliers have proved that they are peaking at the right time. Their two tournament wins have come against the number one and four ranked teams in the nation. Virginia has one game remaining in pool play, as the Wahoos battle Wake Forest on Saturday night at 8:00. With a win, Virginia will clinch a spot in Sunday's championship game.
