Cal State Fullerton got out to an early lead and never looked back, beating Virginia 4-1 in NCAA Regional action. The loss ends Virginia's season.
The Titans struck first in the top of the 2nd. Virginia starter Pat McAnaney hit Joe Scott with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run to make it 1-0. Fullerton added another run later in the inning on an RBI single by Christian Colon. The Titans also got an RBI double from Gary Brown in the 3rd and then a solo home run by Erik Komatsu in the 5th to pad their lead to 4-0.
Virginia nearly broke through in the 6th. David Coleman grounded out with the bases loaded, which appeared to score John Barr. But Greg Miclat was called for interference and the run was taken off the board. The Cavaliers got their first and only run of the game in the 7th on an RBI single by Franco Valdes.
Virginia ends the season with an overall record of 39-23.
