For the third time since 2004, Western Albemarle High School has earned the Wachovia Cup, which goes to the high school with the best overall record among 27 sports. The Warriors get the award in VHSL group AA.
The winner is determined by a point system in state championship competitions. State champs are given 50 points, as points are awarded to the top eight teams in each sport. Western Albemarle was led by state championships from boys tennis, boys track and field, and field hockey. The boys cross country team finished second, earning 45 points for the school, and the Warriors also received contributions from both the boys and girls lacrosse teams, boys and girls swimming and diving, girls indoor track, golf, and girls volleyball.
Western earned 421.25 points, besting runner up and defending champion Blacksburg, who earned 395 points. Western Albemarle is the only Jefferson District team to have earned the Wachovia Cup, which has been given annually since 1990.
